The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney

The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney

$25.64

Walt Disney (1901-1966) was one of the most significant creative forces of the twentieth century, a man who made a lasting impact on the art of the animated film, the history of American business, and the evolution of twentieth-century American culture. He was both a creative visionary and a dynamic entrepreneur, roles whose demands he often could not reconcile. In his compelling new biography, noted animation historian Michael Barrier avoids the well-traveled paths of previous biographers, who have tended to portray a blemish-free Disney or to indulge in lurid speculation. Instead, he takes the full measure of the man in his many aspects. A consummate storyteller, Barrier describes how Disney transformed himself from Midwestern farm boy to scrambling young businessman to pioneering artist and, finally, to entrepreneur on a grand scale. Barrier describes in absorbing detail how Disney synchronized sound with animation in Steamboat Willie; created in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sympathetic cartoon characters whose appeal rivaled that of the best live-action performers; grasped television’s true potential as an unparalleled promotional device; and–not least–parlayed a backyard railroad into the Disneyland juggernaut. Based on decades of painstaking research in the Disney studio’s archives and dozens of public and private archives in the United States and Europe, The Animated Man offers freshly documented and illuminating accounts of Disney’s childhood and young adulthood in rural Missouri and Kansas City. It sheds new light on such crucial episodes in Disney’s life as the devastating 1941 strike at his studio, when his ambitions as artist and entrepreneur first came into serious conflict. Beginning in 1969, two and a half years after Disney’s death, Barrier recorded long interviews with more than 150 people who worked alongside Disney, some as early as 1922. Now almost all deceased, only a few were ever interviewed for other books. Barrier juxtaposes Disney’s own recollections against the memories of those other players to great effect. What emerges is a portrait of Walt Disney as a flawed but fascinating artist, one whose imaginative leaps allowed him to vault ahead of the competition and produce work that even today commands the attention of audiences worldwide.

Pollyanna (Vault Disney Collection)

Pollyanna (Vault Disney Collection)

$9.76

Rated: GSynopsis: Although Walt Disney’s legacy is to a great extent based on his studio’s animated features, the company produced many live-action family films in the 1950s and ’60s, many of which remain dearly beloved today. Pollyanna is one such film, and it shines anew on DVD in this definitive two-disc “Vault Disney” edition that includes a treasure trove of archival goodies plus fun and fascinating features. Based on the book by Eleanor H. Parker, Pollyanna is a timeless portrait of turn-of-the-century small-town America. Hayley Mills, in her screen debut, earned a special Academy Award for her disarming performance as Pollyanna, a recently orphaned girl sent to live with her Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman), a stern, patrician woman who has the townspeople under her thumb. The spirited and optimistic Pollyanna, though, melts hearts like no one since Shirley Temple. Her “glad game” transforms the lives of a self-pitying hypochondriac (the wonderful Agnes Moorehead), the town recluse (Adolph Menjou), the chandelier-rattling preacher (Karl Malden), and eventually, Polly herself. Kevin Corcoran, one of Disney’s most popular child stars, costars as mischievous Jimmie Bean, a fellow orphan whom Pollyanna befriends. Disc One contains warm audio commentary with Mills and director David Swift as well as a bonus Mickey Mouse cartoon, “The Nifty Nineties.” The second disc boasts segments about the making of the film and Walt Disney’s folksy introduction for the film’s television broadcast. The “Vault Disney” collection also includes Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Parent Trap. Donald LiebensonEleanor H. Porter’s story of Pollyanna, “The Glad Girl,” was first filmed in 1920 by Mary Pickford. While entertaining, the Pickford version tended to reduce the supporting characters to stereotypes. Disney’s 1960 remake of Pollyanna wisely offers three-dimensional characterizations, enhancing the charm and believability of the story. In her first Disney film (indeed, her first American film), Hayley Mills stars as Pollyanna, an orphan girl sent to live with her wealthy Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman). A humorless sort, Aunt Polly is taken aback by Pollyanna’s insistence upon seeing the happy side of everything. With her best friend and fellow orphan Jimmy Bean (Kevin “Moochie” Corcoran), Pollyanna spreads her sunshine all over town, transforming such local curmudgeons as hypochondriac Mrs. Snow (Agnes Moorehead), hellfire-and-brimstone Reverend Ford (Karl Malden) and reclusive Mr. Pendergast (Adolphe Menjou) into positive, life-affirming sorts. This she does not by being simpering or syrupy, but by applying common sense and refusing to indulge anyone’s self-pity. Only Aunt Polly refuses to warm up. As the owner of the town orphanage, Aunt Polly will not hear of having a new, more modern facility built, and when handsome Dr. Chilton (Richard Egan) stages a charity bazaar in defiance of Aunt Polly, Pollyanna is forbidden to attend. She escapes to the bazaar by climbing

Mouse Morality: The Rhetoric of Disney Animated Film

Mouse Morality: The Rhetoric of Disney Animated Film

$28.42

"Through the worldview perspective, this book comes to grips with the incongruous moralities in Disney. It enables both parents and educators to gain a critical understanding of Disney content without being judgmental or promotional for the wrong reasons…. Mouse Morality is a pleasure to read and discuss in itself, but shows the pathway to media criticism of the first order." –from the Foreword Kids around the world love Disney animated films, and many of their parents trust the Disney corporation to provide wholesome, moral entertainment for their children. Yet frequent protests and even boycotts of Disney products and practices reveal a widespread unease with the sometimes mixed and inconsistent moral values espoused in Disney films as the company attempts to appeal to the largest possible audience. In this book, Annalee R. Ward uses a variety of analytical tools based in rhetorical criticism to examine the moral messages taught in five recent Disney animated films–The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and Mulan. Taking the films on their own terms, she uncovers the many mixed messages they purvey: for example, females can be leaders–but male leadership ought to be the norm; stereotyping is wrong–but black means evil; historical truth is valued–but only tell what one can sell, etc. Adding these messages together, Ward raises important questions about the moral ambiguity of Disney’s overall worldview and demonstrates the need for parents to be discerning in letting their children learn moral values and life lessons from Disney films.

Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)

Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)

$14.4

Rated: GSynopsis: This must-own “Vault Disney” edition adds a wealth of extra material to the already significant lure of Swiss Family Robinson, the 1960 family classic based on the book by Johann Wyss. John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Tommy Kirk, and Kevin Corcoran star as the shipwrecked Robinsons, who make a new home and life for themselves as the sole human occupants of an island swarming with animal life, including elephants, ostriches, and tigers. As if taming these beasts weren’t enough of a challenge, a band of pirates led by Sessue Hayakawa threaten the Robinsons (but prove no match for the family’s ingenious booby traps). One of Disney’s biggest hits and most enduring films, Swiss Family Robinson was directed by Ken Annakin (and yes, that is where the boy who would be Darth Vader got his name). This DVD set boasts a wealth of archival treasures, including the cartoon “Sea Salts,” segments about the making of the film, a tour of the Swiss Family Treehouse, and fond audio commentary by Annakin, Kirk, MacArthur, and Corcoran. Other titles in the “Vault Disney” collection include Old Yeller, Pollyanna, and The Parent Trap. With themes of survival, adventure, and the importance of working together, this Disney classic remains a favorite with every family. Donald LiebensonNone of the many cinemadaptations of Johan Wyss’ The Swiss Family Robinson are as relentlessly enjoyable as this 1960 Disney feature. The film wastes no time getting down to business, with the shipwreck of the Robinson family occurring as the credits flash across the screen. Fashioning a raft, the family heads to a lush tropical island. While the mother (Dorothy McGuire) isn’t too happy about being a castaway, the father (John Mills) and the sons (James MacArthur, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran) are thrilled at the prospect of carving out a new life for themselves. In short order, the industrious Robinsons have constructed a treehouse with all the creature comforts and “utilities” of their home in Switzerland. Later on, the little party is joined by Janet Munro, the daughter of a sea captain who has been captured by pirate Sessue Hayakawa and his band. After a series of adventures calculated to arouse the envy of every man, woman and child in the audience, the film comes to a rousing conclusion as the Robinsons resourcefully fend off Hayakawa and his pirates with a variety of jerry-built booby traps. A box-office winner to the tune of $30 million, The Swiss Family Robinson proved beyond doubt that Disney’s decision to emphasize the humor and adventure of the Wyss original, while downplaying the sociopolitical undertones, was a sound one. In recent years, the Walt Disney Company has grown far beyond its beginnings in animated films and theme parks to become a major multinational corporation with global reach. As the company’s activities have grown more complex and its influence more ubiquitous, both its internal practices and its attempts to control its now global public environment have generated conflicts that contradict the classic Disney publicity image. The 11 wide-ranging, interdisciplinary essays in this collection cover topics including Animal Kingdom; Gay Days at the theme parks; Disney’s connection to sweatshops; commodification of The Lion King on Broadway; the transformation of Winnie the Pooh; Disney’s experience in urban planning in Times Square and Celebration, Florida; and Disney’s America. A comprehensive introduction contextualizes the essays and relates them to earlier Disney studies. CONTRIBUTORS include Lee Artz, Sean Griffin, Dick Hebdige, Radha Jhappan, Daiva Stasiulis, and Susan Willis.

The Vtech V Reader Animated E-Book System Review   by Paul White

The electronic book market has really started to hit its stride, and a big part of that is because of all the new and inexpensive electronic readers available on the market now. There’s the Amazon Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook, The Sony Reader, and, of course, the new influx of tablet computers beginning with the always popular iPad. But the electronic book market isn’t just an exciting new market for adults. Children are also benefitting from new ebooks made especially for them. To serve the needs of young children in this regard, Vtech has come out with the V.Reader Animated E-Book System, which shows children wonderful animated books on a large touch screen perfect for little hands and minds that are learning to read.

The Vtech V.Reader has been made especially to be durable and resistant to the often rough treatment that little hands can dish out. It’s got a tough plastic design with plenty of buffering for the delicate electronic components, and there’s a protective screen that covers the reader itself for extra protection. It’s made for the benefit of children as young as 3 years old, and its appeal lasts several years, and is recommended for children up to the age of 7.

Each story is fully animated with narration, character voices, and great graphics as well as sounds and music. Children can watch the story, play reading games, and consult with the story dictionary in order to help improve their reading skills. There are even certificates that the child can get for completing reading tasks, which is sure to help make them very proud of their great accomplishments.

And there are several story cartridges available for purchase that bring to life all the characters that children know and love. There’s “Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue”, “Scooby-Doo: Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too!”, “Dora The Explorer: Dora and the Three Little Pigs”, and many more of children’s favorite characters such as the Shrek gang, the Mister Men, The Mickey Mouse gang, the Toy Story 3 gang, and more.

The Vtech V.Reader device requires 4 “AA” batteries for operation, and there’s a plug in adapter available called the V.Smile 9 Volt Adapter, which was originally created for the Vtech V.Smile educational video game system, another great product from Vtech. The adapter is fully compatible with the Vtech V.Reader, however, and can definitely help to save on battery life when an outlet is nearby.

For carrying, there’s also a special V.Reader Storage Tote which will protect the device while travelling and keep it handy for use as needed. The tote comes in blue for boys or pink for girls, so that any child can look fashionable while carrying about his or her collection of books on this fantastic device.

The Vtech V.Reader is a great device for encouraging young children to become interested in reading and helping them to develop the reading skills that will serve them well all throughout their lives. It’s an affordable option for parents and a fun reading device for children that’s sure to be a hit under the Christmas tree.
